ロシアといえば、宗教はロシア正教会。神田のニコライ堂は有名ですが、あそこにもたくさんのイコンが飾られています。

イコンは、聖なる画像で、俗人が描くことはできません。自分の創造性も発揮できず、決められた画像を忠実に模写し、作品にサインを入れることもありません。
Icons are holy images and they cannot drawn by laities. Artists can’t show their creativity, they faithfully copy a set image, and don’t put their autographs in their works.
金箔の使いかたを習ったときに、何枚かイコンの模写をしました。これはそのときに、模写に飽き足らず、描いたものです。厚さ３センチくらいの板に、縁取りの板を貼り、全体に膠で説いた石膏を塗って乾かし、紙ヤスリとかカミソリでツルツルに磨いて、その上に、粉の絵の具をテンペラと呼ばれるたまごを使ったメディウムで溶いて描きます。
When I learned how to use gold leaf, I made some imitations of icons. Thies pictures are what I drew when that time, because I was not enough only copy. On a plate about 3 cm thick, attach onether board at the border, apply the plaster melted by the glue to the whole, dry it, polish it on a smooth crane with a sandpaper or a razor, and then draw it by melting the powder paint with a medium using an egg called tempera.
楽しい作業だったけど、あまり職人気質ではない私、日々、コツコツ一人でアトリエに籠もり、手間のかかるこのような作品を作り続ける画家にはなれなかったな・・・
I eojoyed the task, but I didn’thave Craftsman’s temperament .so I couldn’t become a painter who kept in the suudio by themself every day and continued to make such works that took a lot of time and effort.
